Earthenwood Design Team Update

Wow, June sure has flown by quickly here! Of course, doing a huge trade show at the beginning of the month really distorts my schedule.  So here we are, the last day of the month, and I never announced what the Design Team bead of the month is! This is a new design, which I debuted at Bead & Button.  They are called Fable Pebbles and I have two designs, a horseshoe and a feather.  The horseshoe had the word "Lucky" stamped on the back and the feather says "Fly Away".  I think they are fun pieces with neat symbolism that are the perfect way to tell a story in a piece of jewelry.

Erin Siegel caught on right away to the storytelling potential of the lucky horseshoe that I sent her and created this wonderful Lucky Talisman necklace. I love the knotwork and the silvery beads with the asymmetrical charms on the side and the little pops of color. She said she wanted to make a piece she could wear with anything that had subtle symbolism that was special for her. Read more about the necklace and the symbolism she discovered about the pieces she used over on Erin's blog.

Lorelei Eurto's jewelry always has a subtle aspect of storytelling to me, and this piece is another great example.  All the components seem to be so effortlessly combined, yet each one is so special and is a perfect compliment to the other pieces. Lorelei used a pale flesh Fly Away pebble with the feather design, which works very well with the other artisan beads she has chosen, like the twig and bird beads.  Lorelei's blog is one of my favorite daily reads... check it out to see what other stories she is telling!

Amy of Sprite Creations created this fun necklace using one of my Ice Cream Cone pendants!  I love what she did with the earthy wire and resin painted metal findings, giving them a personalized look.  The muted colors work very well with the brights, making the whole piece look very vintage with just enough summery color.  I love the little details in this piece, too, like the way the clasp hooks right into the ceramic link on the side, and how the little bit of chain dangles in front of the pendant with sprinkle like glass beads.  Nice work, Amy!  Check out her detailed post about this necklace on her blog!

I have been a little behind in my blogging, but I am trying to balance enjoying some of the summer and am (still) recovering from Bead & Button.  I still have a lot of work post-show to do to restock my site, galleries, stores, and my Rust Belt booth, and I am chipping away at it.  But I am also doing a little relaxing, yardwork, and trying to get in some summertime.  Last night, we rode our bikes up to Ferndale to get some dinner and ice cream for the first time.  It didn't take as long as I thought and the sidewalks were in great shape (this would also be my route to ride the bike up to Rust Belt on the weekends, which is the reason I got the bike... I can commute by bicycle!)  It's funny how the same road I drive almost daily seems so different when on bike or on foot.  You certainly see things with new eyes!

New Bundles and Studio Sunday Tour Links

After returning from Bead & Button I collected some beads and pendants before returning them to stock and made up some new Wholesale Bundles.  The Bundles are carefully selected assortments of both regular stock and one of a kind/unusual items that co-ordinate in theme and colorway and are priced at wholesale in $100 bundles. I have eight of them listed in my special Etsy Wholesale shop now, including this red and black and bone white bundle that is a little romantic and a little dark.

That's a little bit of news from my studio... here are some things my bead blogger friends have been up to this week:

New Garden Party Workshop and Earrings too!

This weekend, my beady buddy Lisa Grix will be teaching this adorable Garden Party necklace in our booth at The Rust Belt Market this weekend.  The workshop teaches basic wire and chain techniques and uses natural brass with handcrafted floral lampworked glass beads.

The Garden Party Necklace workshop runs $25 and will be offered June 25 & 26 at 2pm!
I will once again be offering my earring workshop featuring hand painted Vintaj brass charms and glass and natural brass findings.  I took pictures of two other options that are available for you!

The Earring Workshop runs $10 and will be offered June 25 & 26 at 4pm!

Antique Day!

edited post:  Well, I posted this as a whole blog post from my Ipod with words and pictures but the words didn't show up.  These are pictures of restored cast iron furnaces that we saw while out antiquing yesterday.  I think they are beautiful and I am inspired by them.  I guess I am back to the drawing board with the Ipod posting though!

Detroit Diesel

I brought some of my Gear Nut beads to my Rust Belt bead booth last weekend, partially to fit the theme of some of my industrial, gear-shaped beads and partially to fill in some spaces in my sorry looking inventory after all the activity at Bead & Button.  The Gear Nut is a little bit of a tricky bead, since it has the center hole, so I wanted to string up another inexpensive, stackable style pendant necklace to show people how it can be used and I came up with this Detroit Diesel pendant.  The pendant features a black faux suede cord that loops through the central hole, also capturing a large gear within the lark's head knot that holds it onto the cord.  From the gear, I was able to add more gears and a spinner (which can be easily customized to use a variety of charms to suit one's desires).  I like the graphic masculinity of this necklace!  I think this is a good and simple solution for this bead.

Bringing the Rust Belt Home

One of the best things about my weekend booth at the Rust Belt Market is that at the end of the weekend, if I have signed up for the next weekend, I can leave my booth set up during the week.  Packing up is one of the least fun things to do, and it is great to be able to wake up the next Saturday morning and walk in to my shop, all ready to go!  It is a great relief to not have to set up and tear down each night/weekend!
But this week I wanted to bring a little bit of my Rust Belt booth home with me.  For the last few weeks, I have been making lots and lots of pendants especially for this venue.  I haven't really even been showing many of them on the blog!  So I brought a few handfuls home and listed them in my Etsy shop, so you can share in the experience too!
I have a few different lines of simple slab-rolled, cut-out pendants with some of my favorite themes:  keys, gears, leaves, text, doors, and wood-grain.  I listed a couple of each pendant style in the shop, all at $10 each!
Click on over and check out the new work!

Earthenwood Design Team Update

It's Ice Cream Time!  Denise Yezbak Moore created TWO bracelets with the ice cream pendant she received from me and can't decide which she likes more.  So she is putting it up for a vote and doing a giveaway!  I think they are both pretty yummy! Visit her blog to enter to win.

Michelle Mach had a fun twist on the ice cream theme with this ribbon necklace embellished with beads.  It reminds me of chocolate with sprinkles!  Read about her adventures in beading this piece on her blog.
Last but not least, Erin Siegel created another amazing piece using cord and knotting in creative ways.  I love the macrame and leather knotting paired up with the ceramics in this one!  I also love her thoughts about summertime that she shared on her blog.  Click on over to read about them!

Earring Workshop and Kits

For my first class offering, I designed these cute and sparkly earrings.  I wanted something simple and artsy with some color that showed several techniques so these pretty earrings filled all of those requirements.  We have a jump ring, simple bead link, and wire wrap in there: three of the basic techniques for jewelry making!  I have made a leaf and flower option as well, but still need to assemble the samples and photograph them.  I was thinking of offering these as kits on etsy eventually, too.  Anyone interested?

The Earring Workshop will be introduced this weekend at the Rust Belt Market.  Saturday and Sunday at 2pm.  We will also offer the workshop next weekend, times to be determined.  If you would like to stay updated with my classes and local (metro Detroit) schedule, please join the special Rust Belt mailing list I am keeping here.

Rust Belt Bead Extravaganza

I have been anticipating this weekend for months now.  I have teamed up with my buddy Lisa Grix to create a bead lover's paradise at the Rust Belt Market this weekend. I met Lisa many years ago when she had a store in Royal Oak called SRO Beads.  I would visit the store, I taught a few classes there, and she sold my beads.  Lisa always had the coolest beads: vintage, ethnic, artisan, unusual.  She closed the store a few years ago, burdened by a Michigan's economy, a fate common for most of the bead stores that had been open in metro Detroit. When I told her about Rust Belt, she was immediately excited, and that got me even more excited!  I knew I could put out a small display of my own handmade beads, but without help, I couldn't do what I really dreamed and have more of that old cool bead store style space to work and teach in.  She was eager to bring out her old stock and bring it back to the beaders, and to continue teaching and showing her awesome art dolls. Now we have the space to do all these things on the weekend at Rust Belt without having to commit to the confines of a brick and mortar store.  Our two spaces are distinct and independent but will also work together.

I jumped for joy and squeed when we were offered the above space, complete with a vintage post office box slot display that we can use to fill with stock!  I have the right side, she has the left (with the printers drawers) and we will use a small table for classes. This will be a different Rust Belt experience for both of us, but we are excited by the challenge and to get some new beaders hooked on learning a new craft!

I will take more pictures of the space filled in, but I wanted to show you the bare bones potential that we faced this morning.

Back from Bead & Button!

I am home from Bead & Button!  I had a great time, even though it was exhausting.  I didn't get to take many pictures but I have this one booth shot.  Sales were good and it was great to see all my beady friends and meet new ones.  I have been working hard all week since I returned, getting my life and business back together.  I will be back at Rust Belt Market this weekend, so I have to get re-organized for that, and am planning a couple of earring making classes.  I opened up the etsy shop again and set aside some items to photograph for listing soon.  The list is endless, so I better get back to it, but I just wanted to pop into the blog and say hello!

Bead & Button Show and a Sale!

Just a quick note to let you know that I will be out of the studio until next week for the big Bead & Button Show in Milwaukee WI!  If you are coming to the show, stop by and see me in booth #1227!  Mention this post as the "blog special" and I will have a free gift for you!

Not coming to the show?  I will miss you, but don't feel left out!  For the first B&B that I can remember, my website is open and stocked with ready to ship items even while I am in Milwaukee. To celebrate, I am having a special website sale for you!  Take 20% off your order at www.EarthenwoodStudio.com by using the code BEADBUTTON at check-out (I will be shipping any orders placed when I return to the studio June 15th)

I will not be bringing my laptop computer with me this time around, so I won't be blogging or keeping up with much on the internets, but I will check into email once a day at least.  Hope you have a great week and hope to see you at Bead & Button!

Earthenwood Design Team Update

I have two updates for you from the Earthenwood Design Team!  Above, check out the necklace that Erin Prais-Hintz created using one of my Ice Cream pendants!  She calls it "With Sprinkles and a Cherry on Top!" which is exactly what it looks like!  I love the multi-colored sprinkles and the one red bead near the top of the ice cream cone.  It is colorful and candy-like, but the dark copper patterned chain tones it down, making it a bit more elegant and wearable.  Drop by her blog to read her post about it!
Lorelei Eurto also made a yummy piece of jewelry with one of my Ice Cream cones, in a similar color to the one Erin used.  Her piece is very different, though.  She paired the ice cream and link with neat sorbet colored O-Rings and fun little flower gear beads for a very whimsical bracelet.  Click on over to her blog to read her post about this bracelet.

I usually pick a new item to send to the Design Team and to two additional people around the first of the month, but with Bead & Button looming, I just don't have the time.  I will be seeing many of the team members at the show, so I will give those members their June beads.  I think I will also choose two random customers to be honorary team members while at the show, too!  Stay tuned to see what I give them and what they make!

New Work and Wikio's Top Jewelry Blogs

I only have time for a quick post today... it's a busy one.  I finished off my wet clay work for Bead & Button last night, which is a relief.  I can just let go now, because if it is not made now, I won't have it... I just have to deal with what I've got.  And I do have quite a lot, so I should be ok.  Above, some new full clock pendants, made with the Rust Belt Market in mind, but I think I will be adding them to my regular inventory.  Below, some text patterned rings, some (all?) of which will become toggles.  My new work for B&B is mostly inspired by this text pattern and words and letters.
Hey, I also have some fun news! Every month, Wikio compiles a list of the top blogs in Jewelry Making (as well as lots of other categories).  These are some of my favorite blogs and daily reads.  I am in the top 10 this month, moving up 2 spots.  YAY!  Check out the rest of Wikio's top 30 blogs here:
