Spring Cleaning and a Little Teasing

So today is a bit of a teaser post.  hehe.  I took a few pictures of some new beads before I put them out for the Madison bead show.  Up top is the one and only Round Owl!  But don't worry, there will be more! I added her to my website if you are interested in pre-ordering. I actually made this one up into a necklace during the show, which I will show you later, after I get it unpacked and photographed.  She was mostly a test, done at the end of my last wet clay cycle, and I will definitely make more!  She made me squee with cuteness!  Below, I made some birds and nests in the more rusty brown color, shown next to the original sandy brown color.  I really like this color, and it goes with the owls, so I think I will be adding it as an option.
I am still working on unpacking and cleaning up.  This morning I restocked the Etsy shop, and decided to have a Spring Cleaning Sale to make room for all these new items!  I've got about 20 items all under $10, which is a really great deal, so I hope you will click on over and help me clean up the studio!

Pictures from the Madison Bead Show

I had a dreadful time getting moving this morning.  After yesterday's day-long drive, and some stressful last minute Penguicon planning in the evening, I was out for the rest of the night.  I woke up feeling achy and tired and very crabby.  There was more grumpiness with emails and dealing with insurance bureaucracy, and I was about done in.  Alex helped me get up and moving and cheered me up.  I was all weepy and whiny and didn't want him to see me like that, but he consoled me and we headed out on errands.  We ended up browsing at a couple of thrift stores and found our way to an antique store, and by that time I was feeling myself again.  He has a wonderful way of cheering me up. :) We picked up my car at my parents house (I had taken their minivan to Madison) and spent a few minutes there before heading back home for dinner with Skennedy.  Then we checked out the new I3Detroit place in Ferndale... walkable distance from the homestead, which is exciting!  The new space is huge and has so much potential! We worked out some last minute details for Penguicon and chatted with several members and now I am home.  I didn't get a whole lot done today, work wise, but I guess I really needed to get my head together.  Hopefully tomorrow will be more productive and the restfulness of today will help me get through the rest of the week.  I have several orders to work on, bead show stuff to put away, and new pieces to photograph.
Today's pictures are from the Madison show.  I got the "small" artist table, but it was really a large space.  I was able to make a little corner space and put out some extra stuff, and spread my display out a bit.  I think the display in general is looking pretty snazzy, and the new addition of the black leatherette necklace displays has been a good way to show off jewelry examples. I like the rich black and the white porcelain dishes, with the little bit of brown bamboo and paper details.  It's clean and as uncluttered as I can be, and I think it shows off my beads and charms well.

Stop, Slow, Go Show

Well, I gotta be honest, the show here in Madison was not as good for me as I had hoped it would be.  Yesterday was decent, but I didn't do incredibly well, after making my expenses. Today was rather slow, up until the last hour, which had a big surge of activity.  A couple of good sales to other vendors made today decent, sales-wise.  Also, I got to meet the fabulous Brenda Schweder who has been a Facebook friend, and I was excited to get to chat with her face-to-face.  I had time and tools on hand, so I ended up making about 6 pieces of jewelry that will be used for magazine submissions. That was a good use of time, at least.  We decided to not go insane and try to drive back to Detroit after a full day of work, so we are leaving early in the morning for our 8-ish hour drive home. I'm just killing time tonight, I listed the three hearts from yesterday's post over on Etsy, and getting ready for bed shortly. So that's the wrap up. Here are this week's Extra Links:

Song Lore Saturday: Lovers in a Dangerous Time

"Don't the hours grow shorter as the days go by
You never get to stop and open your eyes
One day you're waiting for the sky to fall
And next you're dazzled by the beauty of it all"
"When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Sometimes you're made to feel as if your love's a crime
Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight"

This week's Song Lore inspiration is a song that I don't know very well, but I was reminded of it recently.  I have been very interested in danger and warning signs lately, and have been adding some "danger" colors to my beads.  Red, Yellow, and Green in particular remind me of stop signs, traffic lights, construction warnings, and traffic signs.  I made a few hearts with these colors, mixed with a dirty pewter metallic glaze and bare clay, and I think they have a very urban sort of feeling.  As I made the hearts, I was thinking of a song to go with them... something about love and danger. I remembered a Bruce Cockburn song from the 80's: "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" and I looked it up.  I found the Bare Naked Ladies version of it, which I like a lot.  This seems like an appropriate song, as I type this after a full 8 hour day of driving through Detroit and Chicago to make our way to Madison Wisconsin, where I have a bead show this weekend. Enjoy this video and have a great weekend!

Leaving for Madison in the Morning

I haven't blogged much this week.  I knew it would be a crazy week from getting all the loose ends from the last show tied up and preparing for this weekend's show.  I'll be traveling to Madison Wisconsin tomorrow for the Art Glass and Bead Show with Diane Hawkey. Even though I said I wouldn't be making more beads for this weekend's show, I ended up doing it anyway, hehe.  I have some new owls (including a little round fat one!) and more birds and nests in the kiln right now.  I made more robins and a whole series of very springy, pastel canary charms!  Also, I made several new Heart Windows like the one above, since they all sold.

While it was a busy week, I did get some relaxing time in.  I think I am getting better at making time to do this, which is a goal I have been working on for a long time.  I invited friends over for grilling yesterday, and we took a little trip to Royal Oak for popcorn and a walk around.  And I watched two movies with Alex (one while we both worked), I helped him with a casting this afternoon, and we went out for pizza and book shopping tonight, which was great after a day of hard work for both of us.  I am pretty much ready to leave in the morning, just need to get my clothing and a few extras together in the morning.  Tonight, I am planning an early bedtime and snuggling with my doggie...will be away from her and my comfy bed for a few nights.
If you are in the Madison area, come and say hi at the show!

Owls and Owlets

Lookie at the new Mama Owl Pendants and Owlet charms I have been working on! So cute!  I have been inspired by the Owl Box live stream of Molly the owl hatching her little eggs.  It's strangely addictive to watch a bird in its home, but it is somehow relaxing.
I have had a lot of inquiries about the new Owl designs, so I have added two styles of Mama Owl Pendants to the website, and I am making more right now, so they will be likely to ship next week if you place an order.

Happy Spring and Extra Links

Well the weekend was great!  I had the good fortune to have the amazing Andrew Thornton as a guest the night before the bead show. We had a few snacks and he brought a delicious raisin and apricot rum cake that he made (which was omg so good this morning with coffee for breakfast).  Diane Hawkey came over and Jeremy and Brendan were here, and we all snacked and chatted about art and had a nice relaxing evening. Sunday was an early day, as we all had bead show stuff to do.

The Bead Bonanza was ok, business wise.  It was good to see everyone, and it seemed busy most of the day, but my sales were way down.  I had a good Fall Bonanza, so this happens, but it was my lowest sale day there in a while. *Shrug* it happens, especially in this area.  I am really glad that I don't have to rely on Metro Detroit's economy for my income, because it is really tough here. I came home tired and reasonably satisfied with the day, just not overwhelmed with happiness. Also, I am about 95% sure I had a pendant stolen, which is a (thankfully) rare and unhappy event. On the bright side, I have beads to take with me to Madison this upcoming weekend, and I don't have to push so hard to scramble to get stock together.  I bought a little bit of fun stuff, so I will take some pics and show them later this week.

I missed wishing everyone a happy Spring!  So I am listing a set of springtime robin and nest charms on Etsy this afternoon. I didn't get around to listing the Extra links either, so here they are:

Song Lore Saturday: Babylon

Today's Song Lore inspiration is "Babylon" by David Gray.  I love this song, and have always liked the changing traffic lights imagery that goes throughout it.

 "Saturday I'm running wild
And all the lights are changing red to green
Moving through the crowd I'm pushing
Chemicals all rushing through my bloodstream"
And I have always wanted to use these Portal Steam Stone links to make a traffic light necklace.  Seems a little silly, but I just think it's a cool image. When I found the enamelled gears by C Koop in Red, Yellow, and Green, it all came together very easily.  I linked them all together with some dark gunmetal rings and chain and a central toggle clasp.  It is really a striking piece!
Here is a video for David Gray's "Babylon":
"If you want it
Come and get it
Crying out loud
The love that I was
Giving you was
Never in doubt
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now"

Dry Run, Firey Metal, and Quiet Rest

Wow, its been go-go-go here in the studio!  I am getting ready for the Bead Bonanza on Sunday, which is my first show of the year and is always a good one.  So I have to have a lot of beads and charms ready. I have another show in Madison WI on the next weekend, so I am under double the pressure!  I took a picture of all my beads laid out on the table after getting price labels.  They won't be quite so crammed together at the show, they will be a little more artfully displayed.  I needed to see them all together, though, so they have taken over my shipping desk for now.
I am happy I was able to make some of the most requested beads, especially the Terra Trinkets, which are particularly popular in the Spring.  I have new Trinkets, too, like the owls and robins!  I have a lot of new industrial and steampunkish beads too, so I hope people like them.
While I have been getting ready for the show, spending hours glazing and firing and packaging, there has been a lot of other activity around the house.  Alex has successfully completed his first cycle of casting in the garage studio!  There were some setbacks, but today he had some excellent bronze castings come out.  He has been documenting the process on his blog, and I hope you will go check it out.  I am so happy for him and very excited to have some different stuff happen around here

Well, everyone is gone for the evening, including the dog, who went to see the grandparents for the weekend.  I am having a special awesome guest stay for the Bonanza, so I wanted to get Ms. Furry Pants out of the house so I didn't have to worry about her (and the massive amounts of fur she is shedding lately...omg)  It is quiet and calm here, which is a nice change of pace from the rest of the week, and I think I am going to soak in a hot bubble bath to unwind before bed.  I have been working too hard and need some rest tonight.

Peeking through the Keyhole

I've been so busy I forgot to blog yesterday!  I've got a lot going on... working on two wholesale orders, some stuff requested by a magazine for a spread, my regular orders, and a show this weekend (oh, and one next weekend too).  Whee!  I have a giant pile of beads to sand today, shipping to do, and I need to work on packaging.  Busy Busy.  Plus I think we are going to get the grill out and drink some beer to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. I gotta get moving on all of that, lol.  Here are some new keyhole pieces that have come out of the kilns in the last few days!

ME on Beads Baubles and Jewels on You Tube!

I was pleasantly surprised to wake up to my daily email from Beading Daily and find it was about Steampunk in beading!  Upon further scrolling, I found that I got a mention and a picture of the piece I designed for Beadwork for the article I wrote in 2008.  And then, upon closer inspection, I found a link to a the segment I filmed for Beads, Baubles, & Jewels! My friends at Interweave put it upon their You Tube station, so everyone can see it now!  I still cringe a little, seeing and listening to me speak on TV, but I think I did a pretty good job for my first time.
I made the pendant above from an Earthenwood Triple Gear stone and a Vintaj brass bead, which was flattened to make a pronged setting for the stone.  I spoke a little about Steampunk, did a quick demo, and showed more of my work.  Check me out:

Song Lore Saturday: The Wheel and The Maypole (part one, The Wheel)

Today's Song Lore inspiration is a song by my favorite band, XTC.  It is an important song to me and has been very meaningful in the last couple of years. It's called The Wheel and The Maypole, and it is a two part song. Today I will share some things inspired by the first part of the song, alongside the lyrics that inspired them:
"Time is but clay and I'll see
You and the wheel turn"
 "Round goes the wheel"
"And if the pot won't hold our love
Then we'll dash it to the ground
And if the pot won't hold our love
We'll build one bigger all around"

I will be adding some of these Time Wheel components to the Etsy shop today.

Book Review: Jewelry Inspirations by Sherri Haab

I recently had the good fortune to receive a copy of the book Jewelry Inspirations: Techniques and Designs from the Artist's Studio by Sherry Haab.  As soon as I received it and gave it a quick look, I knew it was going to be a delight!  I was able to spend some time with it on a long car ride, which was a great way to peruse it in full, daydreaming about all sorts of inspired crafty projects while enjoying each page.

This book is all about inspiration, but it is chock full of technique as well. The first part of the book talks about creativity and studio space, giving lots of great tips for setting up a work space for optimum creativity and using sketchbooks to record your ideas. The next section is full of handy techniques for basic jewelry work and shows the many tools that are available and the different tasks you can accomplish with them. There were some great ideas I picked up in the basic section, including tips on making molds and working with resin.

The later chapters are organized by different types of inspiration.  The chapter heads are beautiful collages of vintage and contemporary materials, artfully arranged to set your mind drifting and dreaming.  Some of my favorite inspirations from the book include: Memories, which encourages using personal keepsakes in jewelry designs; Collections, which gives you a good reason to dig in that old vintage button jar for materials; and Blast from the Past, which uses pop culture history reference as inspiration.  I especially love the Hobbies chapter, which draws inspiration for jewelry in common household crafts like cooking and gardening.

The project ideas in the book cover a wide range of techniques.  There are the basic jewelry making techniques, of course, but it is full of different materials and ideas for even the most seasoned jewelry maker.  I found myself learning about things I have never done like knitting wire, casting resin, precious metal clay, shrink plastic, and resin clay.  By the last page of the book, I felt like I had thought about materials that I had already known in new ways, and was excited about materials I had never heard about before.

I think Jewelry Inspirations has a lot of charm and appeal for anyone who is interested in jewelry making, especially those who would like to try a variety of materials and techniques.  But more importantly, it guides the reader to think about different sources of inspiration for jewelry making, helping them learn to look around and see the world with the eyes of an artist.

Nom Nom Nom

I spent most of the day thinking about food.  Well, partly because I had an order for a few fruit and veggie Snack Charms and an editor requesting more, so it was a fruit salad sort of day.  Near the end of my bead making session, I was eating a peach flavored candy while making a peach charm!  (yep, I am easily amused).  I have been making these Snack Charms for years, but then they sort of faded a bit and I haven't made them in a long time.  But since I put them up on the new website, they are enjoying a new life.  It's amazing what a little repackaging and change of scenery will do!

Also today, I met my first health goal, a weight loss one.  The scale had a happy surprise for me this morning!  I have been going to the gym 3 times a week, rarely missing a day.  Even if I give a half-assed workout, I still go... even if I am only trudging my way through it to get to the hot tub at the end of the session... I do it.  And I think I am getting stronger and less out of shape, which makes me happy.  I also started last month with Sparkpeople, a free website that helps with weight loss.  I really only use the nutrition tracker, but its a powerful tool.  I have been tracking my calories and nutritional content most days, which is sort of tedious, but I have learned a ton.  Because I am pretty much dumb about food.  So I am learning how many calories I need, and how to get them best.  One of the big challenges is with the frequency I go out to dinner, so tracking restaurant food has been a big deal for me.  My buddies and I planned a trip to calorie-laden Chipotle tonight for Mexican food, but I have my menu all planned out.  Which, by the way, I am hungry, my friends... I hope they get here soon!

Makers and Community

Another busy day today, which started out kinda blah and ended up pretty great.  We went to the Maker Faire meeting at the Detroit Public Library. It is so exciting that Detroit is one of the 3 locations that Make is having fairs this year!  It will be at the Henry Ford Museum, July 31-August 1, 2010.  I went partially on behalf of the DIY track at Penguicon (and all the great people we are meeting through it, like I3Detroit) and partially for my own personal interest.  I was sort of wondering if I have something to offer Maker Faire.

While I haven't been actively teaching classes on a regular basis, I do still think that education plays an important part in my work.  I like talking about what I do and how I do it, because I think people do find it interesting.  I really enjoyed the business talk I did at GVSU the other week, and I am looking forward to the panels that I am participating in at Penguicon (alongside co-ordinating all the programming we are putting together for DIY) So I have been sort of dreaming of how I could set up a booth to demonstrate bead making, and maybe tile making, and talk about all the variety of things I seem to like to talk about that is related to DIY (like steampunk, running a craft business, etsy, blogging).  I'll have to think about it a little bit more, but the call for Makers goes out next week (March 18th) so I am going to think quick!

One of the things that really struck me was this room full of very interesting and diverse Makers and facilitators, all coming together to educate and connect and form a community.  I was thinking about community, and how I have searched for community over the years, in various artist groups, online communities, and conventions.  I have found that I really like to be at the start of something new, and I like to help set it up, but find the need to move on to new beginnings once a certain level of success is reached. For example, I helped start the Beads of Clay community, the very popular Art Bead Scene blog, and this new DIY track at Penguicon. I guess I am a starter-upper!  I have felt bad in the past for moving on from these different communities when I felt my time was not being well spent with them, but now I see it is a natural progression and that I enjoy the excitement of helping to organize at the beginning of the process.  I think this was a good epiphany for today!

Making Time

The past few days have been busy and filled with activity.  I have many things to do, but I have also been making time to get some good rest, enjoy the beautiful weather, making new stuff, and other things that are good for my self.  I was thinking about time and how I have been spending mine while I was making these new Time Wheel components.  I imagined that while I made each one, it magically gave me more time, like some kind of clay time machine.  Alas, it's not true, but it was fun to think about while I worked. They are in the kiln now for the first firing, and I hope to glaze them soon.  I am rather excited to see them finished!
